Wedding Gifts

Wedding gifts are either the hardest or the easiest gifts to buy. A lot of this depends on the couple. For example, is it the first marriage for each member of the couple? Are they young? Old? Has it been a long engagement?

You need to first ask yourself all of these questions. If you do this, you will be able to come to a better understanding of what they might want or need. Registries address all these issues by the bride and groom telling you exactly what they want, but if you’re still hunting, here are a few examples of how to think about wedding gifts:

• Young couple, first marriage – If this is a young couple and they are both entering into their first marriage, you can be pretty certain that they will need a lot of different things. A crock pot is a nice present, as is a photo frame, but if you want to make sure that you are not buying the same thing as somebody else, you may want to expand your horizons. Buying them something like a digital camera and a printer they can use to fill up all the photo frames they receive might be a good idea. Likewise, it might be an unexpected surprise to get them gift cards to a unique store where they can shop together. By doing things like this, you will be able to show that you have put some thought into their gifting.

• Older couple, second marriages – If you are attending the reception of a couple who is not exactly young anymore and who are embarking on their second marriage, there are some things that you can assume that they will not need. It is pretty likely they have both already accumulated things like crock pots and picture frames. If this is the case, you may want to expand your horizons even further. A great way to do this is by getting them something that will allow them to start a new tradition together. It is up to you to figure out what this item might be, but if you think of the couple’s cultural and religious preferences, you may be able to come up with a great idea.

Giving wedding gifts is certainly an art form, but it does not need to be dreaded. In fact, it is something you should look forward to in the future because it allows people to see how thoughtful you can be.
